The Colorado Judicial Branch does not offer direct online access to court records on its website. Instead, records are available through third-party vendors. The main vendor is CoCourts.com, run by LexisNexis. Other options include Background Information Services and Tessera Data. Each vendor charges its own fees. Under the Criminal Justice Records Act, C.R.S. § 24-72-301, criminal court records in Colorado have their own access rules. Custodians can choose to hold back some records. This is separate from the Colorado Open Records Act that covers most other government files. If you need a criminal case record, contact the court clerk in the county where the case was filed. Colorado Vehicle Records Search

Vehicle records in Colorado are restricted. The Federal Driver Privacy Protection Act, 18 U.S.C. § 2721, blocks access to personal info in motor vehicle files. You can only pull a vehicle record if you meet a permissible use under state and federal law. The main valid reasons are that you own the vehicle, you have a court order, or you need the record for a legal proceeding. Tow carriers, repair shops, and storage facilities may also qualify with the right paperwork in Colorado.

Two search types exist. A vehicle record search shows the current owner only. A title history search shows all owners since the vehicle was first sold in Colorado.

You can request records online through myDMV. Go to the Vehicle Services tab, then Records, then Request a Vehicle Record. In-person requests go to the Westgate office at 3265 S. Wadsworth Blvd. You can also mail the DR2489A form. Processing takes 2 to 3 weeks for online and mailed requests in Colorado. Under C.R.S. § 42-1-206, the department cannot share personal info from motor vehicle records without a valid reason.

Colorado Public Records Requests

The Colorado Open Records Act, or CORA, gives anyone the right to request government records. The law is at C.R.S. § 24-72-201 through 206. You do not need to live in Colorado. You do not need to give a reason. Standard page copies cost $0.25 each. Electronic copies are free. Research time is billed at up to $41.37 per hour after the first free hour. The more specific your request, the faster the office can fill it.

Send CORA requests by email to CORA@coloradoSOS.gov or by mail to the CORA Custodian at 1700 Broadway, Suite 550, Denver, CO 80290.

Some records are not covered by CORA. Exemptions include medical and mental health data, personnel files with home addresses and phone numbers, trade secrets, library records, and addresses of public school children. Marriage and civil union license applications are also exempt, though the licenses themselves are public. Criminal justice records fall under the separate Criminal Justice Records Act in Colorado. Each county and agency has its own CORA custodian, so direct your request to the right office for faster results.

CORA requests should include your name, mailing address, phone number or email, and a detailed description of the records you want. Be as specific as you can. Broad requests take longer and may cost more in research fees. Most agencies in Colorado respond within 3 business days, though no hard deadline exists in the law.
